Festival International d’Opéra Baroque et Romantique de Beaune

For its 36th edition the festival offers a program of 9 operas and oratorios and 3 recitals :


> Handel will open the festival with two new great lyric productions, rarely performed, considered as significant milestone in his career: Samson, a successful oratorio composed after Messiah is conducted by Leonardo Garcia Alarcon. Rodrigo, Handel’s first Italian opera composed at the age of 22 in Italy. Handel already develops a personal style with a large number of marvelous arias. Rodrigo is conducted by young talent Thibault Noally.


> Hervé Niquet with his ensemble of Concert Spirituel for their 30th anniversary will perform the glorious Te Deum by Charpentier. Te Deum is the most famous masterpiece of Charpentier with its instru- mental introduction, composed in the form of rondo with all the instruments (timpani, trumpets,...).


> We invite you to hear 2 famous oratorios of Haydn on the same weekend: The Creation and The Seasons conducted by Laurence Equilbey and Paul McCreesh respectively. The Creation, this monumental work celebrates the creation of the world inspired by John Milton’s Paradise Lost, but also by Handel (especially by Messiah and by Samson). It is considered as a masterpiece of writing, able to reveal the colors of the orchestra and the chorus. The oratorio’s huge success led Haydn and his librettist to compose immediately a new oratorio: The Seasons considered as first great pastoral and lyric symphony of the 19th music century (1801).


> We get back to a Vivaldi opera cycle with a rarely performed masterpiece: Giustino, conducted by Italian Ottavio Dantone. Composed in the middle of his lyric career, Giustino is considered as pivotal work in terms of style, showing the development of Vivaldi’s lyric language.


> 3 famous and popular operas: Mozart’s Nozze di Figaro, Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia and L’Italiana in Algeria. Nozze will be conducted by René Jacobs and presents dazzling and stunning arias. Rossini’s Barbiere, conducted by Jérémie Rhorer, is his most famous opera, with its extraordinary overture but also the famous virtuoso arias sung by the major protagonists. Rossini’s L’Italiana in Algeri, his first comic opera, was highly successful first in Venice and then all over the world. The opera will be conducted by Jean-Christophe Spinosi, familiar with Rossini’s repertoire.


> 3 recitals: Sylvia Schwartz will sing great opera arias by Mozart and Rossini. The virtuose American mezzo-soprano Vivica Genaux choosed to give opera arias composed by Handel and Porpora for the castrato Farinelli. And the final with Andreas Scholl who will perform Vivaldi’s emotional and heartbreaking Stabat Mater.

After Hercules, Theodora, Israel in Egypt, Jephtha, Belshazzar, we continue Handel’s réunissant plus de 1200 salariés qui chantent et découvrent la musique oratorios cycle in English with Samson, composed immediately after Messiah. The work sur leurs lieux de travail. was highly successful and remained one of the most popular works of the composer during the following two centuries. This success is due to the libretto which is based on Fidèle partenaire du Festival de Beaune, la Fondation Orange the biblicla story of Samson and Dalila, one of the most famous scenes of the Ancient renouvelle son soutien à ce grand rendez vous musical : rencontre des Testament. Love and betrayal: the hero Samson is married to Dalila who discovered that his supernatural strength derived from his never cutting his hair. She sheared his hair plus prestigieuses formations baroques et découverte de nouvelles while he was sleeping and betrayed hom to her people, the Philistines, enemy of Samson. voix et de jeunes chefs prometteurs. Handel gives some magnificient choruses and arias of the protagonists: like the chorus “O first created beam“ in Act 1 (used by Haydn for his work “Creation“), “With thunder arm’d“ in Act 3 or the final chorus “Let the bright Seraphin“, Samson’s arias: “Total eclipse“ in Act 1, “Thus when the sun“ in Act 3 or the seduction aria of Dalila “My faith and truth in Act 2.”

  • L’Italiana in Algeri GIOACCHINO ROSSINI 1792 - 1868

New production

L’Italiana in Algeri is considered as Rossini’s first true opera buffa. Composed in Venice, L’Italiana has quickly become so successful that music boxes playing the cavatina “Languir per una bella” have been produced. The libretto taken from the legend about Roxane and Soliman is eminently modern and gives women victory over men’s stupidity and pride. Three suitors are charmed by the beautiful Italian Isabella: bass voice Mustafa, the bey of Algiers, baritone voice Taddeo, the uncle, and young tenor Lindoro, in love with Isabella. The music is captivating, especially the overture and its beginning pianissimo, its sforzati, its crescendi and its irresistible accelerandi or the famous aria of Isabelle “Cruda sorte !” in Act 1.

The Spanish coloratura soprano, Sylvia Schwartz, together with Teresa Iervolino and Matthew Newlin was part of the fantastic and memorable success of Rossini’s opera Tancredi conducted by Ottavio Dantone last July in Beaune. Touched by the welcome and enthusiasm given by the Festival’s audience, she accepted to focus this recital on Rossini’s great opera arias but also Mozart and other conductors. Sylvia Schwartz is one of the most exciting lyric singers of her generation. She has appeared at many of the world’s finest opera houses and festivals: La Scala Milan, Berlin, Vienna, Baden Baden or Salzburg... Sylvia is also much in demand with conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Philippe Jordan, Colin Davis, Gustavo Dudamel, Daniel Barenboim, Simon Rattle, René Jacobs... her favorite roles are Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro, Rosina in Rossini’s Barber of Seville, Adina of de Donizetti’s Elisir d’amore, Sophie in Richard Strauss’ The Knight of the Rose...voice in a flowery speech which ends up in a jubilant «goodbye to life».

This monumental work celebrates the creation of the world inspired by the Ancient Testament and John Milton’s Paradise Lost, but also by Handel (especially Messiah, Israel in Egypt and Samson) and is considered as a masterpiece of writing, able to reveal the colors of the orchestra and the chorus of Laurence Equilbey. The work’s huge success brought it immediately through whole Europe. In the overture the orchestral power introduces in an extraordinary way the famous depiction of the “Chaos before the creation“, followed by the triumphal choral presen- tation of the “creation of light”.

  • Te Deum Marc-Antoine Charpentier 1673-1704

We are pleased to welcome again Hervé Niquet and his ensemble of the Concert Spirituel for their 30th anniversary. They’ll perform Charpentier’s Te Deum, which we present for the first time in Beaune. Te Deum is the most famous masterpiece of Charpentier with its instrumental introduction, composed in the form of rondo with all the instruments (tim- bales, trumpets, oboes, flutes...). Niquet’s recording of Te Deum is often considered as a reference with its multiple instruments, its sound colors and its simplicity. Hervé Niquet invites us to an inspiring moment of beautiful baroque music by Charpentier.

  • The Seasons JOSEPH HAYDN 1732 - 1809

Haydn and his librettist Gottfried van Swieten were led to write another oratorio The Seasons by the great success of his previous oratorio The Creation. The Seasons were composed 1801 and based on the English poem “The Seasons” by Scottish poet James Thomson. Today Paul McCreesh gives the English and not the German version. The Seasons is considered as the first great pastoral and lyric symphony of the 19th music century written for three vocal soloists accompanied by a chorus. The musical writing announces a romantic movement by emphasizing the cyclical nature of the seasons.

Rodrigo is Handel’s first Italian opera written at the age of 22 for performance in Florence. In this Italianate style of music Handel uses a strong personal style, full of numerous outstanding arias that the composer reused in his later operas, like Radamisto, Rinaldo, Giulio Cesare as well as his oratorio Messie. The opera is based on the historical figure of Rodrigo, the king of Spain, discarded mistress Florinda and rightful king Evanco. Both determined to have vengeance. Handel’s music shows an emotional depth and a remarkable portrayal of the characters. The arias written for Esilena, Rodrigo’s wife, are touching, like “In mano al mio sposo“. Florinda’s strong and noble character is powerful when celebrating her triumph in Act 2. Young rebellious prince Evanco, launching the assault of Seville in the marvelous aria “Su,all’armi !“ (Act 2), anticipating the aria “Al lampo dell’ armi“ of his Giulio Cesare in Egitto composed fifteen years later. Once again, we welcome marvelous virtuoso Vivica Genaux in the title role.

New production

Le Nozze di Figaro is the first of three collaborations between Mozart and Da Ponte. The opera is a cornerstone of the repertoire offering an unknown perfection between music and words. The high quality of the libretto and Mozart’s stunning music describe the characters and give a never heard passion. A never seen performance on lyric scene! The audience was so enthusiastic that almost every aria had to be repeated. Famous arias like: Susanna “Venite, inginocchiatevi”, the Countess “Porgi amor”, Cherubino “Non so piu” and “Voi che sapete”, will be performed by René Jacobs favorite soloists: Sophie Karthäuser, Sunhae Im or Robert Gleadow.

Vivica Genaux, the American coloratura mezzo-soprano, is going to perform the greatest arias of Handel and Porpora, two genius composers and rivals on the scene of London. In 1729 Porpora became the leading composer of the Opera of the Nobility, rival of Handel’s Royal Academy of Music. Vivica Genaux’s performance program will highlight a battle between both rival baroque composers, thus we will listen to their greatest works: Handel’s “Abbrugio, avvampo e fremo”, “Venti turbini” and “Cara sposa” from the opera Rinaldo; “Ho perso il caro ben” from Il Parnasso in Festa and “Dopo notte” from Ariodante. Porpora’s: “Il Piè s’allontana” from serenade Angelica, “Vanne nel vicin tiempo...Fremer da luigi io sento” from Il Martirio di San Giovanni Nepumoceno, “Come nave in ria tempes- ta” from the opera Semiramide regina dell’Assiria and “Alto Giove”, his most famous aria that became popular with Corbiau’s movie Farinelli, from the opera Polifemo. Don’t miss this recital event, accompanied by the flamboyant ensemble Les Musiciens du Louvre conducted by Thibault Noally.

  • Giustino ANTONIO VIVALDI 1678- 1741

With tremendous scenes (sea storm, battles and a sumptuous scene of coronation) Giustino is one of Vivaldi’s most ambitious operas, also considered as his masterpiece of maturity. The plot took historical figures and facts from classical sources and added fictional love intri- gues, allegorical figures, deities, and a ghost. It tells the story of modest ploughman Giustino becoming co-emperor of the Byzantine Empire (with Anastasio). Vivaldi’s writing reveals his talent as dramatist, esp. in Act 2 and the beginning of Act 3. Protagonists will be given a large number of astonishing arias, like famous arias “Vedro` con mio diletto“ (Act 1) and “Sento in seno“ (Act 2) both sung by Anastasio, “Ho nel petto“ with solo psaltry sung by Giustino in Act 2 or “Or che cinto il crin d’alloro“ sung by Amanzio, “Sventurata navicella“ and “Senti l’aura“ performed by Leocasta and last but not least Per noi soave e bella full of repeated notes sung by Arianna.

After La Cenerentola and Tancredi, we continue the Rossini opera cycle on period ins- truments with Il Barbiere di Siviglia conducted by Jérémie Rhorer and his orchestra Le Cercle de l’Harmonie. Il Barbiere di Siviglia based on Beaumarchais’s famous comedy Le Barbier de Séville or la Précaution inutile is Rossini’s best-known opera buffa. And also, the most popular with its famous overture and virtuoso arias performed by major protagonists: Almaviva (Ecco ridente in cielo), Rosina (Una voce poco fa), Figaro (Largo al factotum) or Basilio (La calunnia è un venticello). For this Barbier performance we wel- come again amazing singers: Matthew Newlin and Luigi de Donato who have delighted us last summer in Rossini’s Tancredi.

For this year’s final Andreas Scholl will perform Vivaldi’s heartbreaking and emotional “Stabat Mater” but also as counterpoint unpublished Cantates mariales by Porpora, Vinci and Anfossi. The grave lyrics describing Mary’s suffering as the Christ’s mother during his crucifixion in Stabat Mater inspired Vivaldi a dramatic music. “The red priest” achieves emotional summits by describing the feeling of grief and by encoura- ging meditation. After Stabat Andreas Scholl will explore the rich Neapolitan baroque repertoire by performing opera pieces by Nicola Porpora, Leonardo Vinci and Pasquale Anfossi. Porpora, one of the best opera seria composers whose castratos Farinelle and Caffarelli are the most famous students and his contemporary Leonardo Vinci are already well known, this is not the case of Pasquale Anfossi. Even if the musician, com- poser of more than 60 operas, has been as famous as the others during his lifetime. We will listen to Porpora’s “Occhi mesti“ and “Per pietà turba feroce“, parts of Il Trionfo della Divina Giustizia ne’ tormenti e morte di Gesù Cristo. Anfossi’s “Salve Regina“ and Vinci’s “Chi mi priega“ and “Tutti son del materno mio seno“.

  • Les billets délivrés ne sont ni repris ni échangés.
  • Les concerts commencent à  l'heure précise, soit 21 heures. Les retardataires ne peuvent entrer que lors d'une pause. Dans ce cas, le placement numéroté n'est pas obligatoirement assuré.
  • Il est strictement interdit de photographier ou d'enregistrer durant les concerts.
  • Le présent programme est communiqué sous réserve d'éventuelles modifications. Dans ce cas les billets ne sont ni repris, ni échangés.
  • Dans la Basilique, les places de 4e Série sont à  audition bonne mais sans vue directe. Une vidéo retransmission (uniquement image) est assurée.
  • Prière de penser à  éteindre votre téléphone portable avant le début du concert.
  • Cour des Hospices* et repli à  la Basilique Notre-Dame. En cas de conditions météorologiques défavorables, pluie ou temps orageux, humidité importante ou froid, canicule, les concerts prévus dans la Cour des Hospices sont repliés à la Basilique Notre-Dame. Les replis sont toujours décidés après avis de la Météorologie Nationale et Régionale. La prévision météorologique n'étant pas encore une science exacte, il peut arriver que la prévision annonce des risques qui ne se confirment pas. Le repli a toujours pour objectif primordial d'assurer la qualité et la sécurité du concert. Les instruments anciens, à  cordes en boyaux, sont très sensibles à  l'humidité et jouent faux si celle-ci est très importante (plus de 80%). A€ titre informatif, chaque fois que le repli est décidé, le festival perd plus de 200 places, la Cour étant plus grande que la Basilique. Dans la Basilique, les places de 3e série sont à audition bonne mais sans vue directe. Une vidéo-retransmission (uniquement image) est assurée. Par précaution, munissez-vous de plaid ou de pull contre la fraîcheur toujours possible dans la cour.
